Police said Wednesday they were investigating a two-car crash on Gilmer Road that killed a McHenry woman and injured a man.
The woman, Cheryl Martin, 33, was driving east on Gilmer just north of Callahan Road late Tuesday when her car collided with a car driven by Robert Birck, 39, also of McHenry, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
Birck, who was driving west on Gilmer, drifted into the eastbound lane “and they collided almost head-on,” said Deputy Chief Stan Iwan. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:10 p.m., he said. Birck was transported to Northern Illinois Medical Center, where he remained in good condition on Wednesday.
Iwan said Birck’s blood was being tested for alcohol content but that the test results were still pending. He had not been charged with a crime or ticketed, Iwan added.
Lake County Coroner Barbara Richardson said the woman was driving to work in Wheeling when the accident occurred. Martin apparently lived with her parents in McHenry, she said.
