Township officials last week rebuffed the efforts of a group of residents seeking funding for an independent review of proposed South Suburban Airport noise buffer-zone data.

By a 10-12 vote, township officials and residents at the continuation of the annual township meeting voted against a motion that could have given proponents of the data review time to restructure their motion.

Most of the more than 40 residents attending the original April 9 meeting had voted to continue the meeting to last Thursday to obtain a legal opinion on their request that Monee Township fund a review of data used to determine noise contours in the 11,000-acre noise buffer zone. The township residents had suggested earmarking $30,000 for the study.

Village Board member Dale Patterson’s proposal to continue the meeting to June 7 could have bought time for proponents of the special study to restructure their proposal in response to apparent legal obstacles raised by an opinion produced by Monee Township supervisor Christine Cochrane.

But township officials argued there was no need for an additional meeting because the township had supplied a legal opinion, satisfying the basis for Patterson’s original request.
