Police have charged an Elgin woman with reckless homicide, felony DUI, driving without a license, transportation of open alcohol and improper lane usage following a head-on collision late Sunday that killed a Wood Dale woman and seriously injured several others.

Helen Gounaris, 47, was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. Monday at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, according to a hospital spokesman. Gounaris was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, James, who suffered a broken hip and ribs in the collision. He remained hospitalized in fair condition Monday, a hospital spokesman said.

Itasca police said the Gounaris’ car was traveling east on Irving Park Road when it was struck about 11 p.m by a vehicle driven by Cheryl J. Sennett, 28. Sennett was traveling westbound on Irving Park in the wrong lane when the collision occurred, police said.

Sennett was listed in fair condition at Alexian Brothers Medical Center on Monday, a hospital spokesman said. Sennett’s 2-year-old daughter also was listed in fair condition. Her 2-month-old son and 10-year-old son were treated for minor injuries and released.
