Shhhh: Don’t ask your friendly local librarians for help if you have come down to the April 15 wire but are not sure which tax form you need. The fountain of information that helps people look for baseball stats and musicians’ bios and maneuver through the InfoTrac computer reference system turns off when there’s a chance of giving the wrong tax information.

A sign taped to the circulation desk at Highland Park Library reads: “We are not authorized to answer tax questions or give tax advice. Please call IRS at 1-800-829-1040.”

The poster, published by the IRS, came with the forms that the library stocks every year as a public service. And it’s posted every year because library officials say that patrons raise numerous taxing questions. “We can point them to the forms, but we can’t tell them which forms to copy to take home. We don’t know what they need,” said Highland Park reference librarian Joyce Nevins.
