A proposed ordinance will not force property owners with stormwater detention areas on their land to tear down existing trees, the mayor said Thursday night.
Under the plan, property owners and homeowners associations must keep their stormwater detention areas from becoming an eyesore or a nuisance, trustees said. The areas also must be maintained so they can continue to provide stormwater storage capacity.
Although the ordinance bans certain trees from a 100-foot area around a new detention area, that ban will not be strictly enforced if existing trees do not present a nuisance, officials said.
New developments will not be allowed to plant trees within the 100-foot radius if they are included in the ban. Homeowners associations have asked for clarification of the proposed ban before trustees vote on it, said Mayor James Addington.
