Gilded Stars and Zealous Hearts (Sub Pop) (star) (star) (star)
D.C.-based fivesome Velocity Girl continues to gel as a band, generating pleasing tunes and bolstering the instrumental skills they cleverly displayed on their previous releases “!Simpatico!” and “Copacetic.” “Gilded Stars” producer Clif Norrell (who engineered R.E.M.’s “Automatic for the People”) has grafted a bit of that band’s early Southern stylism (shades of “Fables of the Reconstruction”) onto the dreamy, sugar-coated pop cooing by vocalists Sarah Shannon and guitarist/singer Archie Moore, particularly on “It’s Not for You” and “For the Record.”
