The punch of a few computer keys could earn the village more money in the next year, officials said last week.

Downers Grove will seek a special “computer reallocation” of its borders from the U.S. Census Bureau during the next fiscal year in an effort to garner more tax dollars, said Georgia Ragland, assistant to the village manager.

The Census Bureau will count residents whose property was annexed into the village since 1990, the last time the national census was taken.

There have been 54 annexations, with several more expected in the next year, Ragland said. Most of those annexations have been small.

The process will cost $600 for the first area added to the village rolls, then $200 for every area after that, Ragland said. Each area includes several blocks of actual property.

In 1990, census figures showed the village population at 45,858.
