Mark Grace had three hits and two walks Friday, raising his average from .500 to a staggering .588 for the season.

“I’m going to enjoy the heck out of it while it lasts and I’m swinging good,” said Grace. “But the real pick to click today was Jim Bullinger. He pitched eight scoreless innings. And when you do that, you don’t lose. He also had two big two-out hits for RBIs.”

Hot in cold: The Cubs in Wrigley weren’t the only ones in the organization who played in cold weather Thursday. The Triple-A Iowa Cubs beat Omaha 5-3 in 28 degrees at Des Moines. Center-fielder Doug Glanville had three hits, right-fielder Robin Jennings homered and designated hitter Matt Merullo had two hits and two RBIs.

Great backstop: Brian Dorsett started Friday’s game in place of Scott Servais behind the plate.

“Even if Scott stays free of injuries, we plan on using Dorsett or another catcher for 40 to 45 games,” manager Jim Riggleman said.

In the first inning, Dorsett threw out Brett Butler trying to steal his 537th base. In the fifth, Dorsett singled up the middle for his first hit as a Cub.
