Q. I am a gay male. I was born this way, contrary to what some people believe. But I hate it! What are the chances of being “converted,” so to speak? Are there any experimental drugs or places such as universities that are trying to change homosexuality in people like me?

A. We don’t know what makes people attracted to their own sex. We don’t know if it is something that people are born with, or if it comes from some early childhood experiences. Since we don’t know the reason for homosexuality, we also don’t know how to “convert” homosexuals.

However, if this really bothers you, you should absolutely seek counseling. There are counselors who are experienced in these areas and can offer you help. I’m not saying that they will help you to change your sexual orientation, but they should be able to make you feel more comfortable with who you are. The Institute for Human Identity is one place that I know of in New York, but there are others and you should seek out one.
