A $20,300 mechanic’s bill proved not to be an April Fool’s Day joke Monday night, so aldermen voted unanimously to pay the bill for the replacement of an engine on one of the city’s firetrucks.
Fire officials sent Fire Engine No. 63 in for diagnosis recently after noticing engine knock and misfiring, Fire Chief Tom Farinella told the City Council.
Subsequently, two repair estimates both cited major engine damage in the 1988 vehicle and recommended replacement of the engine, he said.
Chief Farinella said, “This engine is well worth the cost of the $20,300 repair.” He said a new engine would cost $260,000.
