In a special meeting of the McHenry County Board, members approved spending $1.8 million over the next three years to improve employee productivity and accountability by fully automating the county’s financial record keeping.

“It was passed unanimously,” said county administrator Bill Barron on Friday after the special meeting. “It should be functional by Feb. 1, 1997.”

Officials said the new system will allow departments to integrate information, retain complete and accurate records and streamline accounting functions throughout the layers of county agencies and departments involved in record keeping.

County officials embarked on the plan to revamp the county’s record-keeping system after a yearlong outside assessment, which found many county departments lacked acceptable tracking methods. Tracking in some departments often involved burdensome paper trails officials said.

Under the new system, officials said, managers will be able to make instant projections for base pay and overtime calculations. The overhaul will include adding a system of security measures to prevent tampering and improper transactions.
