Voters will decide in the town’s first referendum initiative in more than two decades whether ambulance service is worth an additional $3.50 per month to local property owners.
Residents will vote March 19 on whether the village should impose a special levy of $25 on every $10,000 of assessed property value.
Revenue from the levy would support the on-call coverage provided around the clock by seven paramedics on the village’s volunteer fire department. The paramedics are paid $7 per ambulance call.
Steger President Louis Sherman said the funding approach also would put his village of 10,000 in league with other municipalities that include a line for ambulance services in their tax bills.
