Two years ago, Dana Leonard became the hero of Illinois girls basketball when she sank a three-pointer to give her Glenbrook South squad the state championship against Marshall.
Tuesday night, Leonard got a taste of her own medicine.
Azzel Fontanilla hit a 17-foot jumper as time expired to give Evanston a stunning 53-52 upset of No. 11 Glenbrook South in opening-round play at the Class AA Loyola sectional complex.
“I didn’t even know it was in until the bench shouted,” said Fontanilla, who led Evanston (12-14) with 14. “I just put it up when they said, `Shoot it! Shoot it!’ “
Leonard, a junior, led Glenbrook South (22-6) with 17 and was the driving force behind her team’s 10-point, fourth-quarter rally. She scored with 27 seconds left to put South up 52-51, but missed the front end of a one-and-one :10 later.
“They outhustled us for a good part of the game,” said Glenbrook South coach Howard Romanek. “They got off to a better start than we did, and that hurt.”
Alyson Miller (13 points) and Amanda Wilson (12) also hit double figures for Evanston, which was seeded 11th.
Evanston will face No. 7 Maine South (25-3), which dispatched Niles West 55-27 as Joy Pavichevich scored 15 and Denise Pavichevich and Renee Schaul each had 11.
