U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) will announce that he is running for re-election from the 16th Congressional District at two campaign rallies this week, according to his staff.

Manzullo will address supporters at Cliffbreakers in Rockford at 7 p.m. Wednesday and at the Hob Nob restaurant in Crystal Lake at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Manzullo, 51, chairman of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Procurement, defeated Democrat John Cox in 1992 and was re-elected in 1994.

A staunch conservative who has worked for fewer controls on businesses, Manzullo was one of the leaders in the fight to make car-pooling optional under measures passed to reduce air pollution in the Chicago area. He has listed as one of his accomplishments the support he gave fellow Republicans in passing the GOP’s “Contract with America.”

In December, Catherine Lee, 54, former president of the Barrington Unit District 220 school board, and a small business owner, announced that she will run for the Democratic nomination to oppose Manzullo.
