Young and St. Ignatius held high hopes–not to mention rankings–after preseason polls ran, but both have struggled thus far.

Thursday afternoon, they struggled against each other, with Young (4-4) prevailing 47-45 on freshman Shanay Williams’ two free throws with three seconds left.

“We’re finally starting to put it together,” said Young coach Arthur Penny. “And Shanay Williams . . . that is what you call a tough freshman.”

Natasha Pointer, who scored 10 straight second-quarter points, led Young with 27 points and Clarissa Flores added 11. Ignatius (5-3), which led 8-0 but eventually committed 23 turnovers, was led by Mary Pope’s 11 points.

Pointer fouled out with :50 left, but Ignatius missed the one-and-one. Flores grabbed the rebound and Young ran the clock down before Williams was fouled on a drive.
