Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It’s usually lights out at nighttime at Lincoln Park Zoo. But these nights, during the ZooLights Festival, the place lights up like crazy.

The zoo shines with more than 100,000 ligths and 50 dazzling displays. Hot-pink flamingos stand tall, white monkeys hang from trees, and gigantic green-and-red dinosaurs actually move (look for the T-Rex with the red tongue). Our fave was the carousel display. Sooo pretty! Plus the air is filled with holiday music. (Sappy? So what? Tis the season…)

You can fill your tummy with hot chocolate ($2.25), hot apple cider ($1.50), cookies or candy ($1-$3), hot dogs ($3) and more. And you can make holiday cards at the Children’s Zoo; you’ll find tables full of paper, colored foil and other supplies. And check out the cool ice sculptures (but don’t pay to get your picture taken near one, since they don’t show up that great on film). Just do it all before the zoo goes back to being unplugged.

Look for the animals staying up for the event (like the big cats).

The festival is open through Dec. 30 (except Dec. 24-25). You’ll pay $4-$6. For hours and other info, call the zoo, 2200 N. Cannon Dr. in Chicago, at 312-742-2000.
