Clerks or wait staff who serve liquor to minors in the village will have to pay higher fines in the future, liquor commissioners said this week.
Because of an increased number of controlled-buy violations during village sweeps of establishments that sell liquor, the village will raise the citation fine to $75 from $50, officials said.
Violators who do not pay the citation fine face a court appearance and fines of up to $500.

Liquor license holders in Downers Grove have supported the increase, insisting that their employees should be held more accountable for violations, said village manager Kurt Bressner.
Village staff will review the effects of the increase during the first half of 1996 to see if it slows the number of violations, said village attorney Dan Blondin.
Commissioners also said they will extend liquor sales hours for liquor license holders twice annually. The decision will allow vendors to give customers more buying leeway when holidays such as Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve fall on a Sunday, when liquor sales are limited to afternoon.
