Top-ranked Stevenson survived its first scare of the season in a North Suburban Conference opener Tuesday night in Gurnee.
With her team trailing host Warren by three with six seconds to play, Stevenson’s Tauja Catchings (25 points) drove the length of the floor and hit a three-pointer despite being triple-teamed and fouled on the shot.
Then, after missing her free throw, she scored all eight of her team’s overtime points after Katie Coleman (12 points) fouled out late as Stevenson (4-0) prevailed 47-41.
“I’ve been watching Tauja for four years, and nothing surprises me,” said Warren coach Bruce Campbell. “She’s one of the best I’ve seen.”
Julie Minuskin (17 points) had hit two free throws with :06 left in regulation to give Warren (4-3) its three-point lead.
Young 55, Mother McAuley 53: Natasha Pointer hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift No. 18 Young (2-2) to a non-conference victory.
Pointer scored 26 of her 31 points in the second half to lead the rally. The 5-foot-3-inch guard hit 11 of 12 shots in the half and tied the game on four different occasions. She also called a heads-up timeout on the winning possession with a 10-second call just one tick away. Katie Schumacher led No. 20 McAuley (0-3) with 19.
Elgin 84, East Aurora 42: No. 2 Elgin (5-0) won its Upstate Eight opener and posted its 50th straight home victory–one short of the state record–behind Melissa Parker’s 19 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists and eight steals. Kelly Williams’ 21 points led East Aurora.
Resurrection 81, Palatine 38: Tara Babich and Amy Anderson each scored 15 points as five players hit double figures for No. 3 Resurrection (4-0).
Maine West 60, Glenbrook South 53: No. 4 Maine West (4-1) beat No. 15 Glenbrook South (5-1) in a Central Suburban League crossover. Julie Fregetto scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the first half and also finished with 12 boards to lead the winners. Roni Lambert added 13 points and Eileen Kerrigan hit seven fourth-quarter free throws en route to 11 points. Dana Leonard’s 24 points led Glenbrook South.
Loyola 66, Immaculate Heart of Mary 16: No. 6 Loyola (4-0) rolled in the GCAC crossover as Kristin Santa scored 16 points, Beth Schillen 15 and Olga Gvozdenozic 12.
Lyons Township 46, Hinsdale Central 34: In a West Suburban Silver opener, No. 13 Lyons (5-1) won its fifth straight to knock off No. 9 Hinsdale (3-2). Amanda Miller scored 15 points and Kelly Maley added 11 for the winners, who held Hinsdale star Leah Berki to eight points.
New Trier 89, Deerfield 46: No. 16 New Trier (4-1) cruised as Briana Fitzgerald tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds and Emily Krone added 14 points.
Glenbrook North 51, Niles West 29: Kelly Collins scored 20 points and Rose Schlueter registered five steals for the host Spartans (5-2) in a Central Suburban crossover.
Downers Grove North 51, York 42: Casey Leonhardt’s 26 points and Catherine Hill’s 14 points and 13 rebounds led Downers Grove North in a West Suburban Silver opener.
Trinity 47, Notre Dame 35: Judy Lanza and Margaret Spencer each scored nine to lead Trinity (3-1) in a GCAC opener. Notre Dame (2-2, 0-1) was led by Lizzette Perez’s 17 points.
Crane 67, Roosevelt 61: Latavia Davis’ 30 points–her second straight game with 30 or more–led Crane (1-4) in its home opener. Keisha Langston’s 20 points paced Roosevelt (2-2).
Yorkville 63, Oswego 51: Margaret Brummel scored 17 points and Tess Pierce added 15 as Yorkville improved to 4-0 with the non-conference victory.
St. Scholastica 48, Immaculate Conception 45: Shannon McGowan’s 26 points, six steals, three blocks and two assists helped keep St. Scholastica (2-0) unbeaten.
Timothy Christian 67, Luther South 23: Kristi Bosman’s 18 points, five rebounds and five assists and Cheryl Kooima’s 14 points and five boards led Timothy Christian (3-2) in its Private School League opener.
Ridgewood 54, Geneva 47: Kathryn Batonski’s 13 points powered Ridgewood.
