Perhaps it was post-holiday lethargy that hit Westinghouse in the first half of its Lyons Township Classic matchup with Mt. Carmel, or maybe it was just a strong defense.

But whatever caused the seventh-ranked Warriors to score a paltry 23 points in the first half Saturday wore off during the intermission as Westinghouse came out with a 23-point third quarter and went on to win 67-54.

The run was capped with a six-point play. With four minutes left in the third quarter, Davis Stennis (29 points, 10 rebounds) was fouled during a layup and coverted the three-point play. On the same play, however, Mt. Carmel’s bench was assessed two technicals. Westinghouse made three of the four free throws for the six-point play, and cruised from that point.

“We picked up our intensity in the second half,” said Westinghouse coach Frank Griseto. “You have to give (Mt. Carmel) credit for holding us to an un-Westinghouse-like first half.”

Jimmy Sanders had all of his 16 points for the Warriors (3-0) in the second half. The senior point guard also added 11 assists. Marlo Niles was the leading scorer for Mt. Carmel (2-1) with 17.

Senior guard Allen McIntosh stepped up with 15 points, including five three-pointers, as No. 14 St. Joseph (1-2) knocked off Lyons 55-37. Rubin Conway followed with 14 points and Richard James added 12.

Hales Franciscan tournament: In the championship game, ninth-ranked Young combined a sizable rebounding edge and the sultry shooting of tournament MVP Quentin Richardson for an 83-66 victory over No. 12 South Shore (3-1).

Richardson, who is only a sophomore, had a career-high 41 points. His outburst overcame another crowd-pleasing performance by South Shore’s flashy forward Paul McPherson, who had 38 points.

“It’s been about four years since we’ve won it,” said Young coach George Stanton, whose team outrebounded the Tars 35-21. “We had a real good year (that year), so that is a good indication.”

Cordell Henry had 13 and yesterday’s hero, Daveeno Hines, added 10 for Young (4-0). Joel Bullock, who chipped in 16, was the only other South Shore player in double-figures.

In the third-place game it was No. 7 Carver over Orr 101-66. The Challengers (3-1) raced to a 26-10 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Nick Irvin had 17 of his team-high 22 points in that quarter, while Riderick Thompson added 15, Delbert Howell 14 and Kimonie Evans 10 for Carver. Darrell Daniel hit seven three-pointers en route to a game-high 24 points for the Spartans (2-2).

In the seventh-place game, it was Robeson in a thriller over Corliss 52-50. Antoine Simmons (22 points) hit the game-winner at the buzzer for the Raiders (1-3).

In the fifth-place game Hales fell to CVS 53-44. Marcus Ross had 15 to lead the Cavaliers (2-2).

Schaumburg tournament: Schaumburg led 6-5 early but No. 1 Thornton’s dynamic duo of Erik Herring (19 points) and Melvin Ely (11 points, seven rebounds, three blocks) led the Wildcats (3-0) on a 20-3 run midway through the first half and on to a 55-31 thrashing of host Schaumburg (2-1) in the title game. Jeff Reichardt scored 11 points to lead the Saxons, who were just 5 of 15 from the field and didn’t score a two-pointer until the last minute of the third quarter.

“Our defense was just outstanding,” said Thornton coach Rocky Hill. “We also did a great job on our halfcourt set offense. We came here on a mission. Last year, we embarrassed ourselves here. The scary thing about us is that we still have room for improvement.”

St. Charles tournament: Palatine opened the second quarter with a 12-0 run and took command of its 58-53 upset of No. 17 Thornridge. Tournament MVP Lamar Ingram had 28 points for the Pirates (3-0). Keith Peterson added 10 points and 8 assists. Cachun Combs led Thornridge (2-1) with 21 points.

In the third-place contest, Seth Langley scored 24 points and Butch Carretto added 13 as Ottawa (2-1), which led the entire game, hit five of six free throws after Wheaton North (1-2) closed to within four with just over two minutes remaining in the game to pull out a 67-58 victory. Vince Thomas led Wheaton with 14 points.

Casey Dodson scored 22 as St. Charles prevailed 66-60 over East Aurora in the fifth-place matchup. Aaron McGhee led the Tomcats with 20.

Fenton tournament: Kevin Taylor tossed in a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime and Glenbrook South (3-0) pulled away in the extra period to prevail 86-81 over Rolling Meadows and earn the tournament title.

Glenbard West tournament: Nelson Grant scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures and grabbed 12 rebounds as Homewood-Flossmoor (3-0) ended Proviso East’s run of tournament titles at six in a row with a 61-48 triumph.

Reggie Davis scored 13 points, including six points on an 8-2 Pirate (2-1) run early in the third quarter to put Proviso up by four, but Homewood countered with a 22-5 run of its own to go up by 13 and the lead would never fall below seven as the Vikings hit 10 of 12 free throws late in the game. Ahmed Stockdale added 11 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for Proviso.

“We started to believe that we could play tonight,” said PHomewood-Flossmoor coach Roy Condotti. “We were the better team. I’m not complaining, but I want the kids to understand its not the end of the season it’s just a beginning and when you win like this teams start to mark you.”

St. Patrick tournament: Corey Maggette scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds, and tournament MVP Mark Treadwell had 13 points and eight rebounds, as No. 10 Fenwick (2-1) denied host St. Patrick (2-1) a title on its home court with a 50-35 win.

York tournament: A three-pointer by Todd Jablonski with 2:45 left pulled host York (0-3) to within one point, but De La Salle (3-0) scored the final eight points of the game, including a big offensive rebound putback by Mike Bailey (15 points), as the Meteors held on to win their third straight York tournament 72-63. Jeff Dowiarz led York with 30 points including three three-pointers.

Willowbrook tournament: Downers Grove North (3-0) remained perfect, downing Willowbrook 72-51 behind John Lackaff’s 36 points and John Oleksyn’s 20.

Oak Park-River Forest tournament: Larry Jackson had 21 points and 8 rebounds and Jason Ayers added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists as Oak Park (3-0) took the title with a 62-48 win over Lane Tech.

Jacksonville tournament: Wheaton Academy (1-2) outscored Near North 22-12 in the second quarter and held on for the 66-62 semifinal victory. Aaron Lunt led the Warriors with 19 points and Jef Bishop added 12.

Tyresse Steward had 22 points as Curie (3-2) came back for the 54-52 win over Austin.
