Taking a page from David Letterman’s book, Dianne McGuire, president of the Naperville Unit Education Association, has issued her top 10 reasons for being proud of schools in District 203:

10. 66.1 percent of teachers have master’s degrees or beyond.

9. 99.8 percent of parents had at least one contact with the child’s teacher in 1994-95.

8. 96.3 percent of students are in attendance every day.

7. 75.5 percent of tax dollars collected are expended in the education fund.

6. More than 90 percent of students meet or exceed the state instructional goals.

5. 94.7 percent of students graduate.

4. 81 percent of high school seniors took the American College Test and 66 percent took the Scholastic Assessment Test, far exceeding national or state averages.

3. More than 95 percent of the class of 1995 indicated plans to attend 2-year or 4-year colleges.

2. After Project Leap intervention, 77 percent of the 1st-grade participants were reading grade level materials with 95 to 100 percent accuracy.

1. The average District 203 performance in literary achievement places them at the 90th percentile nationally.

McGuire presented her top 10 list during an American Education Week observance Monday before a District 203 board meeting.
