Lore (Atlantic) (star) (star) (star)
Irish quartet Clannad–the team of siblings Maire and Ciaran Brennan, and their uncles, acoustic guitarists Noel and Padraig Duggan–whips up mysticism and a mesmerizing collection of traditional Gaelic tunesmithy with “Lore,” a recording that continues a long line of superb world music. As usual, the troupe includes all the pipes and whistles bandied about in Celtic music, but it’s the resonant qualities that really make Clannad a premiere Irish band–particularly Maire Brennan’s vocals and the male singing enmeshed with heavily textured, sonic keyboards. The glorious track “Seanchas” swirls with a dervish of saxophones. A dose of peace-preaching and a plea for conciliation in Northern Ireland bring added urgency.
