A historical marker will be dedicated at the site in Robbins where the first U.S. airport for black aviators was founded.
In 1931, the Challenger Air Pilots Association established an airport in Robbins after members couldn’t fly out of Chicago’s airports.
The club’s 15 to 20 members built a dirt airstrip, a hangar and their own planes.
The Robbins Historical Society and village officials will dedicate the site. In addition, educators at Kellar Junior High School will unveil a new history program on pioneer aviators.
