Representatives of Holy Family Catholic Church announced plans before the Village Board on Tuesday night for a proposed 50,000-square-foot addition to the church.

The addition, estimated to cost $5 million, would consist of two new wings that would connect with two existing wings, thus creating a diamond-shaped courtyard for the church at the southeast corner of Palatine Road and Thornback Drive.

One of the proposed wings would contain an expanded nursery for mothers and infants during services, as well as a toddler center, a recreational area for teenagers, and space for a possible licensed day-care center.

The other proposed wing would contain a meeting room, space for counseling services, a multipurpose room, space for senior activities, and space for overnight retreats. A third section, which would join the two new wings, would have space for adult religious education, a book store and a library.

Patrick J. Molohon, president of the parish council, said the addition is needed to accommodate a congregation that has grown from roughly 1,500 parishioners in 1988 to 3,100.

The Village Board has referred the proposal to the village staff for review. A public hearing will be scheduled.
