Tech dweebs have been yapping about virtual reality for years. Someday, they’d say, you’ll be able to play a game that is just like being totally in another world.
Nintendo’s Virtual Boy steps up but doesn’t cross the “someday” line. True, it’s a big upgrade over Game Boy; instead of those wimpy green graphics, Virtual Boy uses 3-D red and black graphics that get you into the games. The dual speaker system gives you stereo sound — combine that with the awesome 3-D and you really get pulled into the game. Plus, the game is double-gripped for better play.
To save bucks on batteries, Nintendo will release an AC adapter. But there’s a hitch with that: VB no longer becomes a portable system. Still, Virtual Boy is a step above Game Gear, and certainly Game Boy. But it’s no virtual reality — except the cost (gulp): $180. Blockbuster Video is offering a Virtual Boy rental for $9.95, plus a $50 (yikes!) deposit.
