In anticipation of temperatures soaring back to the 90s later this week, Harvard Unit School District 50 has put out a “heat alert” notifying parents that public schools and St. Joseph Catholic School will be sending children home an hour earlier than usual.

The early dismissals will apply to the first three days of the new school year-Wednesday, Thursday and Friday-according to District 50 officials.

Students at Washington, Central and St. Joseph schools will be dismissed at 1:50 p.m.; at Jefferson School, at 1:55 p.m.; at Harvard Junior High School, at 2:10 p.m., and Harvard Community High School, at 2:15 p.m.

Except for three mobile units at Washington School, the schools lack air-conditioning, said a District 50 spokeswoman.

Notes will go home with students on Friday announcing dismissal times for the following week.

Late-minute changes to attendance hours would be announced on AM radio stations WMCW-1600, WAIT-850, WMAQ-670, WGN-720 and WBBM-780; FM stations WZOK-97.5, WBBM-96, US-99 and WFYR-103.5, and TV stations WGN-Ch. 9 and WFLD-Ch. 32, officials said.
