Backup cornerback Kevin Miniefield returned to practice Thursday on a limited basis after a long layoff with a hamstring injury. Although he could play Monday night against Cleveland, chances are his first preseason test will come Aug. 20 at Soldier Field against Arizona.

“It was the first time he’s been out here all camp, so it was good to have him back,” coach Dave Wannstedt said.

School’s out: Rashaan Salaam was asked if he worries about the immediate expectation that he should break free for a 40- or 50-yard gain in his first NFL preseason game Monday night.

“I wouldn’t mind doing that, but it’s the pros,” the ex-Colorado Buffaloes running back said. “It’d be nice, but everyone has to realize there’s no more Iowa States, Oklahoma States or Nebraskas.”

Wannstedt wasn’t pleased by seeing Salaam fumble a pitch Thursday in morning practice.

“Rashaan let the ball hit the ground and we have to get that squared away,” he said. “It was the same play the ball hit the ground yesterday. So I’ve got to look at the film and see if it was the pitch, if it was Rashaan or if it was the play.”

Special players: Two names to watch Monday on special teams are cornerback Dwayne Joseph and safety Anthony Marshall. John Mangum will take ex-Bear Maurice Douglass’ spot on the nickel defense, but Joseph and Marshall may be guys stepping up to handle the other variables that Douglass brought to this side of the game.
