Some 50 volunteers spent Monday closing down and cleaning up the McHenry County Fair grounds on Illinois Highway 47 in Woodstock.

The five-day annual agricultural festival ended Sunday with lower attendance figures-about 100,300 visitors this year compared with about 110,000 last year. Not a bad turnout, considering the rainy weather, said fair association President Ron Hansen.

“Everything was a success as far as we were concerned, other than getting rained out of one harness race,” Hansen said. The rain stopped long enough Sunday evening for 3,000 fans to pack the grandstands for the fair’s grand finale: a wild and muddy demolition derby.

Fair organizers are looking forward to next year and perhaps expansion of the antique-selling booths so successful this year, Hansen said.
