The city may ban the parking of recreational vehicles, boats and trailers in a front yard during the winter as a part of a council committee’s attempt to rewrite nuisance laws.

City attorney William McGrath said he is preparing a draft revision to an existing ordinance that better defines what is a nuisance vehicle and where it can be stored on a residential lot.

The effort by the Civic Improvements Committee began as an attempt to tighten restrictions on junked automobiles. But aldermen this week instructed McGrath to expand the revision.

“It’s a limited problem,” McGrath said. “There are enough complaints in enough neighborhoods that councilmen thought this was necessary.”

The revised ordinance also will require that motor vehicles parked in the front yard be on pavement prepared specifically for parking. The revision also will limit how much of a front yard can be paved for parking.

The committee does not plan to recommend banning RVs and boats from front yards during the summer, nor place any restrictions on storing the vehicles in back yards at any time, McGrath said.
