An 82-year-old man was killed Wednesday after his car crossed the center line on Illinois Highway 31, plowed through two parking lots and then struck a tree.
Carl Federman, 124 Hamlet St., Batavia, was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. in the emergency room at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva, where he was taken after the 9:47 a.m. accident.
Kane County Coroner Mary Lou Kearns said an exact cause of death had not been determined by Wednesday afternoon pending further investigation.
“Witnesses said he was slumped over the wheel with a glazed look in his face,” Kearns said. “We’re not sure yet whether he was dead before the collision or died as a result of it.”
Federman was driving north on Illinois 31 near Houston Street at the time of the accident, authorities said.
