Preliminary figures released Sunday placed “Pocahontas” in the top spot with an estimated $30.5 million in ticket sales. That figure was revised to $28.8 million, putting it just below “Batman Forever,” which had sales of $29.2 million, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.
The Walt Disney animated film about an Indian woman’s romance with an English settler remained short of the $40.8 million “The Lion King” made last year in its opening weekend. “Pocahontas” had opened to mixed reviews nationwide.
“Congo,” although generally panned by the critics nationwide, was No. 3 with $8.2 million. “The Bridges of Madison County,” directed by Clint Eastwood, came in fourth at $6.2 million.
