Army officials have announced plans to clean up areas in and around two buildings at the base that may contain potentially dangerous chemicals.

The work is expected to begin by September, following a required 60-day public notification period.

Building 43, which is near Bartlett Ravine, was used as a furniture refinishing shop.

Cleanup activities will focus on removing the residue from solvents and other chemicals that were used in furniture stripping and restoration.

Building 368, on the south end of the base where the Navy now resides, was used as an auto hobby shop, where base personnel could go to work on their cars.

Regulators believe the problem there is waste oil.

Details of the work can be found in the base’s Administrative Record.

When complete, the Administrative Record will contain a compilation of all environmental studies and cleanup activities at the fort.

It is available for public inspection in Building 48G, Leonard Wood Avenue, at the fort.
