A village committee has agreed to look into increasing the storage capacity of the detention basin at the southeast corner of Glade Street and Imperial Court to help reduce flooding in that low-lying neighborhood.

The decision came after several neighborhood residents appeared at a recent Planning, Building and Zoning Committee meeting to express concerns about a developer’s proposal to build two homes partially on what is now a flood plain. Residents feared the proposed development by Long Grove Homes Inc. would aggravate flooding in their neighborhood.

Village officials, who had said they were not previously aware of flooding in that area, decided not to make any decision on the developer’s proposal until the flooding problems at Glade and Imperial were resolved.

The solution that the Flood and Water Committee decided to look into this week is the least expensive among all those proposed. It would involve lowering the detention basin by 1 foot. Cost is estimated at $12,000.

Cost of the other solutions ranged from $30,000 to $200,000. They included widening the storage basin by 42,000 cubic feet ($94,000); constructing a storm sewer along 900 feet of Glade Street or Imperial Court ($100,000); installing lift stations for the basin ($75,000 to $200,000); buying the property at 203 West Glade St., which floods regularly, and then tearing down or moving the house somewhere else ($150,000); or elevating the homes in the area prone to flooding, waterproofing their basements and adjusting the grade on their lawns ($30,000 to $40,000 per home).
