Anthony Young is going back on the disabled list.
Young strained his left hamstring warming up during the debacle at the Astrodome on Sunday and was hobbling Monday night. He will go on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 23, the day after his last outing in Houston, when he pitched four shutout innings to earn his first save.
This will be the fifth time in his three-year career that Young has been on the disabled list.
“DL–that’s my middle name,” said Young.
Next move: The Cubs will either activate third baseman Steve Buechele or bring up a pitcher to take Young’s spot. Buechele lost his starting job to Todd Zeile and then suffered a strained muscle in his left side. He is eligible to come off the disabled list. If the Cubs decide they need more pitching, they will bring someone up. Left-handed reliever Larry Casian went on the disabled list June 15 retroactive to June 14. He won’t be eligible to come off until later this week.
Florida bound: Thirteen months after undergoing shoulder surgery, Jose Guzman will begin a rehab assignment with the Cubs’ rookie team at Ft. Myers, Fla. But it will be awhile before he comes back. Riggleman says he expects Guzman to need the maximum 30 days pitchers may rehab.
Cap’n Fergie: Pitching coach and Hall-of-Famer Fergie Jenkins was named honorary captain of the National League All-Star team. He joins Riggleman, who earlier was named to the NL coaching staff. The game is July 11 in Arlington, Texas, where one of the luxury suites in the new ballpark is named after Jenkins, who pitched for the Rangers from 1974-75 and 1978-81.
