The first Oktoberfest being planned by St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church may have to be canceled, organizers say, because the village has delayed issuing a liquor license for the event.
Dan Schneider, steering committee chairman for the Oktoberfest, said the liquor license needed to be approved at the Village Board meeting on Tuesday so that officials of the church, at 111 S. Hubbard St., could secure vendor contracts for the Sept. 22-24 event.
Without beer and wine, Schneider said, church leaders fear the event could go down the same path as Algonquin Founders Day, which went dry for the last two years and saw attendance plummet. Beer and wine will return to the this years Founders Day celebration, to be held July 26-30.
The issue will be considered at a July 6 meeting of the General Administration Committee.
