The village could spend up to $10,000 on a logo for its Economic Development Commission and Visitors Bureau, officials said Monday.
Commissioners said the money, from the village’s hotel and motel tax fund, will be used to hire a graphic designer to create a logo and slogans for Downers Grove’s newly formed Economic Development Commission and the Visitors Bureau.
“We’re looking for something that will capture what Downers Grove is trying to do with the Economic Development Commission, with the downtown area, to promote our image,” said village manager Kurt Bressner.
But some said the expenditure is a waste. Instead of paying a professional to design the logo, the village should hold a contest for local children to submit their ideas for a logo, said resident Dan O’Neill. Officials could then award a $500 cash prize to the child with the best design, saving the village thousands of dollars, he said.
“Chicago does it; other towns do it,” O’Neill said.”Why shouldn’t we?”
Officials agreed, however, that the $10,000 price was a bargain. “We’re trying to rejuvenate things, and we want a professional job,” said Commissioner Tom Sisul. “We’re getting a real deal.”
