Round Lake Unit School District 116 students were dismissed early for the third day Tuesday because of the heat but won’t see their school calendar extended beyond July 6, district officials said.

Students were sent home Monday and Tuesday at 1 p.m., completing two-thirds of the school day, enough to qualify as a full day under state law, Round Lake Supt. Mary Davis said.

But students were let out at 11 a.m. Friday. That would put them below the daily minimum of 5 classroom hours of instruction, which is required to have the day counted toward the state mandate of 176 days of classroom instruction, according to Rich Basden, an administrator with the Illinois State Board of Education in Springfield.

The district, however, could apply for what Basden called an “Act of God” day, which would exempt them from making up Friday’s lost classroom time.
