Railroad crews on Tuesday closed Three Oaks Road just west of U.S. Highway 14 to make way for a rail crossing upgrade and intersection improvement project.

Three Oaks is scheduled to be closed through July 1, according to Gary Stauffer, Cary superintendent of public works.

The work is being done by crews of the Union Pacific Railroad, which has taken over the Chicago & North Western Transportation Co. It is part of the overall reconstruction of the U.S. 14-Three Oaks intersection, Stauffer said.

The detour for motorists approaching Cary from the west will be to take Three Oaks to Georgetown, then south on Georgetown to Industrial Drive, east on Industrial to Cary-Algonquin Road and north on Cary-Algonquin.

Motorists will cross the bridge that carries traffic over U.S. 14 and then make a sharp right turn back to U.S. 14. The detour for those coming from the opposite direction will be the same route in reverse.

Later in July, highway crews are scheduled to close Cary-Algonquin to traffic for construction that is expected to last up to two years. Work also continues on the Illinois Department of Transportation project to widen and improve U.S. 14 between Cary and Crystal Lake.
