Gail Moreland, who helped prosecute McHenry County’s only defendant ever to sit on Death Row, announced Monday that she will run for circuit judge in next spring’s Republican primary.

Moreland, 46, now an attorney in private practice in Marengo, prosecuted Charles Albanese, 57, formerly of Spring Grove.

Albanese has been sentenced to die by lethal injection on Sept. 20 for the poisoning murders of three relatives, including his father, in order to take over the family’s trophy-making business in McHenry.

Moreland, of Woodstock, was an assistant state’s attorney for seven years before entering private practice in 1986, four years after the Albanese conviction. She also is a former assistant attorney general and former assistant public defender in Cook County.

An attorney for 21 years, Moreland is running for one of three circuit judgeships that are expected to be up next year.

Separately, Crystal Lake attorney Richard H. Jackson, 42, announced that he, too, will make a bid for an elected judicial position in the 19th Circuit Court District, but in the Democratic primary.
