Magnets in the Kulture Magz collection are hand-painted and depict African figures. They’re priced from $6 to $10.

Magnets have taken the place of tying string around your finger as a reminder to keep appointments or do chores.

Andrew Wharton and Edward Meertins-George formed Infinite Conceptions Inc. in New York and developed magnets that feature African cultural motifs.

“You can remember your appointments and bring the African aesthetic into your home,” says Wharton.

The magnets, called Kulture Magz, are hand-painted, plastic African figures, which have texture similar to wood.

The figures include a Baoule mask, which represents three types of African dances; Aku-Ba, fertility dolls named by the Ashanti tribe and carried by pregnant women to ensure the birth of healthy child; Bajokwe, a mask that represants an elder male forming an initiation dance; the Senufo double mask, inspired by the art of the Senufo people West Africa.

The collection also includes a figure of a high jumping contemporary African dancer and a drummer.

“The magnets help to introduce newcomers to African art on a smaller and affordable scale,” says Wharton.

The magnets,$6 to $10, are available at the Lake County’s Black Underground Bookstore 582 S. Genesee, Waukegan, 708-244-8466. For more information, call Infinite Concepts at 212-297 0820.
