The county has received a $49,000 federal grant to fight drunken driving by forming a task force to study the problem and propose solutions.

The county Finance Committee on Wednesday voted to accept the funds and create the McHenry County DUI Task Force after July 1.

The committee will be comprised of community leaders, law-enforcement experts and representatives from the liquor industry who will examine the causes of drunken driving in the county, said Greg Leitza, director of special services for the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department.

The group will then propose solutions, such as community education and increased enforcement.

The grant will last for one year, until June 30, 1996, when the county is expected to apply for another grant to continue the program.
