In response to residents’ complaints about no-parking signs, the city is taking a second look at its minimum street-width standards.
Whether parking is allowed on one side of the street or both depends on fire-safety requirements for access for emergency vehicles and crews, officials said.
The ordinance requires a street to be at least 32 feet wide from curb to curb before parking is allowed on both sides. Fire Chief Larry Swanson said his department has recommended that the standard be lowered to 30.5 feet.
The issue arose when city crews began posting no-parking signs along some streets in newer developments, mainly on the southeast side, Swanson said. The newer streets average 26 feet in width.
The Public Works Committee plans to study the standards of neighboring municipalities and reach a decision at its July meeting.
