The corps is considering, among other things, possible locations for flood control reservoirs. Such reservoirs and other flood-control measures under consideration could cost more than $160 million, according to the corps.
“Obviously if we build reservoirs, we will need a lot of local community input on feasible locations,” said Ward Miller, director of the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission.
Any flood-control solutions must be cost effective as well as provide for recreational or environmental habitat, Miller said.
Two years ago, the corps began a $2.2 million comprehensive study of the Des Plaines River watershed from the Wisconsin state line south to Riverside in Cook County. The study is expected to be completed by March, but, according to engineers, it shows that flooding along the Des Plaines River costs an average of $11 million a year and will only worsen as development spreads.
Thursday’s meeting is the first in a series of local forums that will be conducted over the next nine months. It will be at 7 p.m. at the Libertyville Township offices, 359 Merrill Ct. For more information, call 918-5265.
