The symbols displayed by the overhead projector looked like they could have come from a building in any urban gang-infested neighborhood.
But they did not.
The graffiti turned up recently in McHenry County and Algonquin Township, according to Les Lunsmann, chief investigator for the McHenry County north central narcotics task force’s gang unit.

The graffiti was displayed before about 30 residents who showed up at a gathering Wednesday in the village’s library to discuss the formation of a chapter of the McHenry County group Communities Against Gangs.
The residents agreed to form the chapter and elected four officers.
Algonquin Police Chief Russell Laine said, “I don’t say we have a problem today being overrun (with gangs).
“I’m saying we have a problem because it’s growing.”
