Look for Anthony Young to be back with the Cubs when they return to Wrigley for a 10-game homestand beginning Thursday.

Young has been on the disabled list since undergoing a “Tommy John” ligament transplant on his elbow last Aug. 15. He was expected to miss most or all of this season, but has been ready to pitch for weeks. He made his seventh rehab appearance in the minors for Class-A Daytona Tuesday night.

The only reason Young hasn’t been back with the big-league club sooner is the Cubs are carrying 12 pitchers and couldn’t find a roster spot for him. That should be resolved Wednesday or Thursday when the Cubs trade pitcher Willie Banks to the Montreal Expos for third-baseman Sean Berry–if the Expos will still have him after his abysmal performance Tuesday night.

Young, a starter in all but one of his appearances last year, will be used out of the bullpen.

Bully, Bully: Right-hander Jim Bullinger threw off a mound before Tuesday night’s game. He is eligible to come off the disabled list but his sore elbow will need a while longer. “It’s coming along,” said Bullinger. “That’s the most effort I’ve been able to give it and it felt good.”

Holy Cow!: Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray will be making a few more road trips than originally planned. Caray first planned to travel to Cincinnati for the season-opener in April and make two trips each to St. Louis and Atlanta, where he has family. He says now he will make the Fourth of July series in New York against the Mets and a swing to Los Angeles and Colorado in August.

Out of the Woods: Cubs first-round pick Kerry Woods is scheduled to pitch in the Texas high school baseball tournament Thursday or Friday. Don’t expect a repeat of last weekend’s performance when his coach let him throw a staggering 177 pitches, angering the Cubs, and creating an incredulous buzz around the baseball world.
