player ready...In order to make its restaurant industry more competitive, the city is considering relaxing liquor-license restrictions to allow wine and champagne to be served with meals before noon Sunday.
The proposal sets 10 a.m. as the earliest a restaurant patron could order spirits at the table.
“Businesses that have Sunday brunches say they are losing customers because they can’t serve champagne,” said Mayor Fred Norris. “This will allow them to be more competitive.”
In the Fox Valley area, Elgin, Aurora and Batavia permit full-service restaurants to serve alcoholic beverages with meals before noon Sunday.
Norris, who doubles as the liquor commissioner, said he does not believe the change would cause any detriment to the community.
The City Council’s Judiciary Committee has endorsed the proposal, but stipulated it should apply only to wine and champagne, not mixed drinks or beer.
In addition to the 15 restaurants that hold liquor licenses, the change would apply to resorts and special permits for occasions at which food is featured.
The council rejected a similar plan about five years ago.
State law used to prohibit all liquor sales before noon Sunday, but the statute was changed to allow communities to set their own standards.
