A 20-year-old West Dundee man who reported last week that he had been shot in the groin by an unknown attacker apparently had shot himself by accident, according to the Kane County sheriff’s office.

Ballistics tests on the angle at which the bullet entered the man’s body poked a hole in his story.

The man told deputies his vehicle was stopped in traffic about 9 a.m. Friday at Bolz and Sandbloom Roads when a man ran out of a nearby wooded lot and held the gun to his head. The suspect allegedly ran away with the gun, the initial report said.

In reality, the gun, a .25-caliber automatic, went off accidentally as he was driving around sitting on the weapon, the sheriff’s office said.
