City workers are celebrating the successful move of two century-old oak trees weighing about 25 tons apiece.
The two 50-foot high trees were moved about 10 feet to allow for road improvements scheduled for Ridge Road in southwest Highland Park.
Moving the trees was more difficult than anticipated, but by late Wednesday both trees were in their new home.
“Round one may have gone to the trees,” said city forester Larry King. “But rounds two and three went to the city.”
The trees’ chances of survival are about 50-50, King said. To provide for the extra care they will need, the public works department has extended a water line complete with spigot to the trees so that they can be watered regularly to promote health.
