Lords of Acid
Voodoo-U (American)
(STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Lords of Acid join Front 242 at the fore of Belgium’s electronic dance music. Thematically, “Voodoo-U” is in-the-gutter stuff (as if the cover art of nude, cavorting she-devils isn’t enough to rankle). The lyric shockwaves resonate with house-music stylism and blowout sequencer work courtesy of producers Maurice Engelen and Nikki Van Lierrop. Singer Ruth McArdle replicates Madonna’s vocal throatiness-and naughtiness-on “Young Boys,” about the corruption of youth. “Marijuana in Your Brain” lists assorted maladies-few printable-associated with the drug. It lopes along, reconstructing a reggae beat, at odds with the high-voltage rave-up that constitutes the disc.
