The village’s Health, Safety and Welfare Committee has voted unanimously to change the zoning code to require all power lines needing replacement to be installed underground, unless otherwise directed by the Village Board.

This action, which applies only to power lines exceeding 2,600 linear feet, comes after a local citizen’s group, called Residents for Responsible Power, began lobbying the Village Board to take a closer look at the issues surrounding overhead power lines.

One issue raised is the potential danger of prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields, which are produced when electrical currents travel through wires. Some people believe the fields are linked to cancer in adults and children.

Some residents told committee members that they believe burying electrical wires would eliminate potential health dangers, increase reliability of service and make certain areas of the village more aesthetically pleasing. Others argued that underground lines would raise property values.

Although Commonwealth Edison would not necessarily object to installing the underground power lines, company officials warn that burying lines is expensive, and customers would be responsible for absorbing the higher costs through their electric bills.

The Village Board is expected to vote on the issue on Feb. 27.
