There are many ways to make positive changes in your diet, says Sara Parks, president of the American Dietetic Association:

– If your favorite foods are high in fat, calories or sodium, eat them less often or in smaller portions.

– Add more low-fat foods to your diet, such as fruits, vegetables and grains.

– Make food tradeoffs that give you the taste you crave with the nutrition you need. For example, when making omelets, use egg whites or egg substitutes instead of whole eggs.

– Use skim or 1 percent milk instead of 2 percent or whole milk. Instead of using cream or half-and-half in coffee, try nonfat milk.

– Reach for pretzels as a snack instead of potato chips.

– Try vegetable pizza instead of the pepperoni variety.

– Go for whole grains and fibers, such as wheat bread, bran cereal and brown rice.
